Ways to foster self-esteem in your child

Self esteem is how everybody feels about themselves and having a healthy self esteem will allow you to accept yourself and grow more confident.

As parents, you need to be your child’s biggest cheerleader, ardent fan and a back patter extraordinaire.

When your child develops a healthy self esteem it will allow them to appreciate their self worth, recognise their importance, take responsibility for their actions and show respect and care for everyone.

Here are some healthy ways you can foster self-esteem in your child:-

1- Teach them new things

There are so many new skills that you can teach your baby, like- holding their cup, use a spoon or learn to walk for the first time.

All of these skills will slowly foster their self esteem and they will feel great achieving it.

2- Take it slow

It’s important to take it slow when you are teaching any new tasks to your child.

Every task is a learning process for them to get better and by taking it slow it will allow them to enjoy doing the tasks as well.

3- Wisely praising your child

Learn to praise your child but never over do it.When you praise them it shows how much you appreciate and love them.

Over appreciating your child will over inflate their ego and they might even feel like they didn’t deserve it.

4- Praise their hard work

Instead of focusing only on the results, praise the hard work they put into completing a task.

By praising their work, it will make them feel like they did a good work despite what the outcome is.

As they work hard and don’t focus on the end goals they are more likely to succeed.

5- No criticising

Your criticisms can stay on with them for a very long time even after they grow up.

Telling harsh words to them can hinder their performance and destroy their self esteem.

It takes patience to teach them new skills instead of getting angry on them and criticising them.

6- A role model

You can teach your kids so much by being a positive role model in their lives.

When you put efforts while you do your daily household or office work, your children learn  and respect your hardwork.

Instead of just rushing through the tasks, you can instead enjoy doing them and your child learns that as well.

7- Assign your kids tasks to help out

One of the best ways to teach your kids to be more responsible and to foster their self esteem is to assign them tasks they can do at home and appreciating them when they complete it.

For example, teach them to brush their own teeth or comb their own hair. You can even check out this amazing book called “How my body works” at lilamigonest that will help them understand more about how to take care of their own body.

Helping you out in your day to day activities or helping out their sibling will make them feel more confident.

8- Focus on their strengths

If your kid loves doing certain activities and is great at it then appreciating them and assigning them those tasks will make them feel good.

You can focus on their strengths and slowly encourage them to get better at their weaknesses.

9- Allow them to take healthy risks

You can sometimes throw caution in the wind and allow them to take healthy, well-calculated risks so that they learn their mistakes on their own.

It will help them develop confidence and to make choices that are more responsible.

10- Teach them about setting realistic goals

Instead of setting unrealistic goals that are unattainable and not healthy teach them to set realistic goals that are easier to accomplish.

Having goals that are within reach and appropriate to their abilities is going to help them in the long run.
