How to manage if your twins are fighting?

Are you parents of twins and you are tired of seeing them fight?

We know it can be pretty hard to manage two babies at the same time and it becomes even more challenging when they start fighting with each other all the time. Just like any other siblings, twins fight also. These fights can begin because of something small, like being pushed or not sharing their favourite toys and can escalate slowly.

Though this phase of fighting is completely normal and is a part of their growing up, you need to take proper actions now so the fights don’t get worse. This fighting is how they can find their own identity and learn to live with each other.

The following methods are tried and tested to help you manage your twins from fighting and bring peace back into the house:

1- Acknowledgement

Instead of blaming just one of them, acknowledge both of them and their perspective of the fight.

Listen to what they have to say individually and understand no one child is the victim and the other is perpetrator.

You need to remain fair to both of them. If you favour one child more than the other, the other child will continue to behave badly.

2- Rules

Establish some ground rules for your twins in your house and follow them consistently. These rules need to be the same for both children.

It is your responsibility to ensure that your twins are following the rules.

3- Change of environment

One quick way for your twins to stop fighting is to take them outside and let them get a change of environment.

Once they are outside, they can get distracted and feel more calm instead of staying cooped up at the house all day.

You can go out for a walk with them around the neighbourhood or take them to the playground to play with other children.

4- Space

Twins need their own space too.

If they continue fighting for no reason, then keep them separate for some time. If your partner takes one of them outside, you can spend time with the other baking their favourite cake or watching their favourite movie together.

Keeping them desperate for some time will also make them miss each other.

5- Remain calm

It’s important to remain calm when you see both of them fighting.

You don’t have to raise your voice as it might escalate the situation. You need to be a role model to them, so instead of engaging, you can sit back and observe. You can also get out of the room and take a breather so they can learn to solve their problems on their own.

Your children are going to observe you and learn to manage their own emotions.

6- Individual attention

Your twins need their own individual attention.

Try to find out what each of them likes doing. If one of your child likes staying indoor and solving a puzzle, then assign a time in the week when you can sit down and solve puzzles with them.

If the other child likes to read books then you can buy their favourite books and read them together.

Spending one-on-one time with them will help them feel loved as individuals thus improving their relationships as twins.

Conclusion

It’s important to remember that like any other relationship, there will be loving moments as well as disagreements that the twins will need to navigate together to make their bond stronger.
