Fun food activities for kids

Pandemic can become a stressful time for both parents and kids. With everyone cooped up in their house, your child might be bored out of their minds and in serious lookout for activities that can entertain them and also help you bond with them better.

1- Grocery shopping

When you go out to the grocery mart to buy your vegetables and fruits take your child with you. 

Point out to them the different names of these vegetables and fruits and ask them what they like eating more. 

Engage them in a conversation where you can discuss the important nutrients that each vegetable provides.This will make the child curious to try out the vegetable when you cook it for them. 

2- Describe itAs you are cooking, invite your child to sit in the kitchen at a safe distance and observe what you are doing.

Have conversations with them about the texture of a fruit, colour and shape. Describe them if you have any favourite memories of eating this fruit in your childhood. 

This will help you recognise your child’s food preference. 

3- Work of art

You can ask your child to prepare their dinner plate by giving them the dishes and asking them to arrange it the way they want. 

They can arrange it to look like a funny face with mashed potatoes or arrange it to look like sea waves with noodles all depending on their imagination.

This will make the kids excited to complete their meals.

4- Cookie cutters

You can buy cookie cutters and cut bread or cake in to different shapes. 

It is simple and takes minimal time so you can easily cut it out and your child will love eating round-shaped or star-shaped toasted bread.

5- Theme dinners

Choose a particular day in a month, to prepare and have theme dinners as a family at home. 

You can design a menu based on the theme whether it is Chinese, Thai, Korean, Indian or French. 

6- Touch the food

You can play a fun activity with your kid by blindfolding them and asking them to touch various fruits or vegetables. 

They can check if it is warm, cool, soft, firm or mushy. 

7- Smell the food

You can hide various food items in different opaque jars and ask your child to smell to identify them.

You can cover the jars with a paper towel so your child can’t see it and ask them to smell them.

8- Discover

The next time you go to a grocery store ask your child to choose an item to buy that they have never tasted before.

Picnics can be an exciting activity for your kid. 

You can ask them to help you pack meals that they would like to have, ranging from, french fries, sandwiches, fish fingers, slices of fruits, fresh cucumbers or strawberries dipped in nutella. 

10- Snack platters 

You can ask your kids to plan and design how they want their snack platter to look like. 

They can arrange a variety of fruits, flowers, nuts and dates in whichever way they want.
